Chekhov and Tolstoy, and Why We Need to Keep Reading Russian Literature

November 5, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join us for an engaging evening talk with incredible local author Rosamund Bartlett, on Saturday 5 November, 7-9pm.

Tolstoy is one of the world’s greatest novelists, but during his lifetime he was better known for his promotion of non-violence, and for his campaign against the Russian government and the Orthodox Church. Chekhov, father of the modern short story, was deeply influenced by Tolstoy’s moral philosophy and social activism. This talk will discuss their unusual friendship and the continuing importance of their humanitarian mission.

Rosamund Bartlett is a writer and translator whose books include Tolstoy: A Russian Life, longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize, and Chekhov: Scenes from A Life. She is the translator of the Chekhov anthology About Love and Other Stories, shortlisted for the Weidenfeld Prize, and Chekhov: A Life in Letters. Her new edition of Anna Karenina was published in 2014. She grew up in Ham.
