SUMMARY:Book club meeting 16
DESCRIPTION:This month we’re reading Women’s Prize Winner The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. \nThe book follows fourteen-year-old Benny Oh\, who begins to hear voices after the tragic death of this father. The voices belong to the things in his house and sound variously pleasant\, angry or sad. Then his mother develops a hoarding problem\, and the voices grow more clamorous. \nSo Benny seeks refuge in the silence of a large public library. There he meets a mesmerising street artist with a smug pet ferret; a homeless philosopher-poet; and his very own Book\, who narrates Benny’s life and teaches him to listen to the things that truly matter. When a book and a reader are meant for each other\, both of them know it… \nWe’ll meet for the book club in the shop on Wednesday 7 September @ 7pm – everyone is welcome and we encourage newcomers\, just drop us an email at orders@paradesendbooks.co.uk to come along!

SUMMARY:Book club meeting 14
DESCRIPTION:This month we’re reading Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk \nMore darkly humorous than the title suggests\, Drive Your Plow is a subversive\, entertaining noir novel. SUMMARY:Book signing: Only Heroes and Horses
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday 29th May at 2pm for a very special book signing with local writer Natalie O’Rourke MBE\, author of Only Heroes and Horses: the heart-warming true story of the Park Lane Stables. Come along to get to know the author\, grab your copy of the newly-released book\, and hopefully to meet a special four-legged star guest… \nNatalie O’Rourke was once an ordinary little girl from Birmingham in all respects save one: she was lonely. When she discovered how much she loved horses\, she decided she wanted to grow up and run a riding stables. But this would not be your average stables: she wanted hers to cater for children and adults with disabilities\, additional needs and anyone who needed a friend – people who you might not expect to find riding\, but who she knew could find happiness through horses\, because she had. \nFull of guts and optimism\, Natalie fought tooth and nail to achieve that dream in the face of some hefty tragedy\, heartbreak and hardship. Even the Covid-19 crisis couldn’t slow her or her league of fearless Park Lane colleagues down – despite barely surviving financially in lockdown\, the stables’ ‘Pavement Ponies’ paid visits to the community on a mission to cheer their neighbours up\, and tirelessly supported the NHS. \nBut when the news came that the landlord was selling the stables\, and that the Park Lane horses and their humans would be evicted unless they found a whopping £1\,000\,000 to buy the plot\, it seemed a mountain too high even for this plucky team to climb. Could they win the support of the nation and with it their fight to save the stables? \nOnly Heroes and Horses is a book infused with love\, strength and hope on every page – a testament to human kindness that won’t fail to leave its readers uplifted or with a tear in their eye. We’re really excited to host this spectacular book signing\, so do come along!

SUMMARY:Book club meeting 13
DESCRIPTION:This month we’re reading The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak  \nShortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2022\, The Island of Missing Trees is a rich\, magical tale of belonging and identity\, love and trauma\, nature\, and\, finally\, renewal. \nIt is set between present-day London and 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers\, from opposite sides of a divided land\, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas\, who is Greek and Christian\, and Defne\, who is Turkish and Muslim\, can meet\, in secret\, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic\, chilli peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town\, the best music\, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget\, even if for just a few hours\, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows. In the centre of the tavern\, growing through a cavity in the roof\, is a fig tree. \nWe’ll meet for the book club in the shop on Wednesday 25 May @ 7pm – if this sounds up your street\, just drop us an email at orders@paradesendbooks.co.uk to come along.

SUMMARY:Book club meeting 11
DESCRIPTION:This month we’re reading The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey \nThe book begins in March 1976: St Constance\, a tiny Caribbean village on the island of Black Conch. A fisherman sings to himself\, waiting for a catch – but attracts a sea-dweller he doesn’t expect. A beautiful young woman cursed by jealous wives to live as a mermaid has been swimming the Caribbean Sea for centuries. And she is entranced by the fisherman and and his song. But her fascination is her undoing. She hears his boat’s engine again\, follows it\, and finds herself at the mercy of American tourists. After a fearsome battle\, she is pulled out of the sea and strung up on the dock as a trophy. The fisherman rescues her\, and gently wins her trust – as she starts to transform into a woman… \nWe’ll meet for the book club in the shop on Wednesday 9 March @ 7pm – if this sounds up your street\, just drop us an email at orders@paradesendbooks.co.uk to come along!

SUMMARY:Book club meeting 9
DESCRIPTION:This month we’re reading a novella for our festive December book club: Love by Hanne Ørstavik. \nLove is the story of Vibeke and Jon\, a mother and son who have just moved to a small place in the north of Norway.
